Undertaken within the context of my Master’s thesis in Artificial Intelligence, the project proposed by MbarQ’s team focused on researching approaches to advance Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems by pairing semantic vector search with knowledge graphs. The aim was to combine flexibility and efficiency so chat and Q&A assistants can deliver higher-quality answers after retrieving relevant information from complex knowledge bases.

Writing a thesis is already a great learning journey, but doing it alongside real industry use cases and the expertise of the MbarQ team added immense value that a purely academic setting rarely offers. From day one, the team treated me as one of their own, whether cooperating in projects, exchanging ideas over coffee, grabbing lunch, or heading out for other occasional events. The atmosphere of openness and mutual support created a perfect environment to learn directly from colleagues and their know-how in crafting AI solutions. Beyond my usual development toolkit, Python, Pandas, PyTorch, and friends, I enjoyed diving into MbarQ’s Azure-based stack and discovering how to work on AI projects in the cloud, an area to which I had limited previous exposure.

A major highlight in my internship was being invited to join several other MbarQ colleagues in a Microsoft-led hackathon for the Belgian federal government. In just a few intense days, we built a viable prototype solution for a real-world challenge. Fast-paced, demanding, and incredibly rewarding, the event was the ideal arena to test some of my thesis ideas and see how they can evolve into something that delivers tangible value.

Discovering Low Code, Team Spirit & Innovation

Over the past three months, I had the opportunity to join MbarQ as a Low Code intern, focusing on Microsoft Copilot Studio and the Power Platform. Coming from a background in Data Analytics, this was a new world for me—but one I’m very glad I explored.

In the beginning, everything felt a bit overwhelming (as it always does with something new), but with the help of my amazing colleagues, I quickly found my way. Tutorials, hands-on experience, and a lot of curiosity helped me understand the power of low code and how Copilot Studio can really make a difference.

What made the biggest impact on me, though, was the team. From day one, I felt truly welcome. Everyone was open, supportive, and always ready to help out. The atmosphere was relaxed and collaborative—exactly what you hope for during an internship. I also loved the weekly Mcafe sessions, where team members shared their knowledge and ideas. It kept the whole team learning together.

Looking back, this internship wasn’t just about building skills. It was about joining a team that values growth, innovation, and people.
